Description

I bought this pattern (Vogue 8353) a while back because I really loved the concept of making a new pattern by selectively tucking out the plaids in this dress. The original fabric (the black and white gingham) didn’t really do it for me, so I spend a long time thinking about what fabric I should use. Finally I settled on this teal/green plaid. The squares aren’t one inch as the pattern recommends, but I figured I could compensate for this by just taking out more tucks in smaller increments to get the same waist circumference.

In this end, that turned out to be kind of a pain… on the first fitting the dress was about six inches too big in the waist and looked really dowdy. I ended up taking it in at the side seams and it fits much better. Now we just need some warm spring days here in Ithaca so I can actually wear it around!

I have some more details about fitting, etc on my blog here.

love your fabric choice and the dress looks fab on you – really flattering, and has a cool retro feel to it. would love to try this pattern, but not sure my skill level is up to it… or my patience, with all those little tucks!

I am so late with the comment, but better late than never, right? The dress turned out gorgeous! I prefer your fabric choice to the original, the black and white contrasted checks in that scale can be tricky. Well done!

Thanks everybody! I’m so psyched to hear all of your comments, especially after so much indecision about what kind of fabric to use. You guys made my day :)

Very cool optical illusion. Your color choice was perfect (I think the black-n-white looks dowdy). And I’d love to see the back if you take anymore shots.

Yep, it’s a grill, and you can also see one arm of the hammock stand as well! There are some advantages to living in the middle of the forest :)
