Even though I admire Big Karl a lot, I can´t follow his advice – I love love colours too much! How big was my surprise and joy this last september, when he sent a few models with pink suits on the runaway! So finally he changed his mind :-))))
The Donna Karan Pattern attracted my attention in february already and I knew this would be my first fall project. I saw this coat in my mind: orange or pink should it be!
In july I found the perfect fabric: a wool/angora blend, wonderful quality for a wonderful price too :-)
This time I didn´t change the pattern, because I find it already perfect in its elegant simplicity. After a first confusion regarding the size (I thought I was a 14), I decided to take the smallest size 6, and even this was at the end too big: especially the back had too much fabric. So I made 6 additional darts and took this way 12cm from the back. Next time when I sew this coat I will modify the pattern from the beginning…
The interesting thing with this coat is that it is not sewn the common way (right side on right side), but overlapped (left on right) and then topstiched twice. Afterwards the seamallowance is cut to 3mm. Of course you can only do this with a non-fringe fabric like wool. The topstitching was a challenge for me, I stitched with half speed and full concentration.
Lining was not designated, but I made it anyway, the coat simply falls much better with it. I also made a belt from the same fabric, but you can wear the coat with a leather belt too. From an old golden necklace I made the belt loops and the hook – and I put suitable golden buttons.
p.s. don´t you think it is a wonderful colour combination with the yellow gingko leaves? :-)

The pattern is great indeed! And I think this pink combines also very well with green or yellow or orange… I’m a crazy “colourista” :-)

O.M.G. cris but this is stunning!! Your photo’s are fabulous and show of your skill with a sewing machine to perfection. I ’m nearly speechless with envy here as i love this coat so much. You would never find something so classic and elegant in the shops and if you did it would cost a fortune. Totally beautiful coat cris and you look simply divine. The accessories are fab as well x

Dear Mary, thank you so much for your nice comment! Indeed, sewing gives me a sense of liberty because finally I can wear what I want without spending a fortune and without seeking for months after a certain piece I like. And if you want the coat, you can simply sew it, is this great, isn’t it?

I’m going to buy this pattern and i’ll give it a go!! I am not up to your level yet cris but i can only try. I am still wrestling with my cape! It’s massive on me lol and i don’t like the 3 colours so i’m making changes and going with two colours lol x

I´m sure you are much more than my level Mary, you are sewing for a long time! and what else am I also doing than trying? Just do it and you´ll be happy :-)
