This dress is based on an original 1950s Couture Dress, for which the Victoria & Albert museum in London has uploaded a free pattern to their site. You can find the pattern here. I used only the skirt part of the pattern and drafted the bodice myself, because I didn’t like the way the dress has a band across the bust and it was difficult to eliminate it from the pattern. I uploaded a picture of the original dress from the museum. Hmmm….I think my dress needs a petticoat.
The dress was fairly easy to make only the thrifted fabric I chose to use for this dress turned out to be a disaster!!! It kept ripping! You can read more about this project on my blog.
really, really bad old thrifted fabric (a disaster!!!)

Thank you so much for the pattern! And it’s such a pity that the fabric was so much trouble – it looks gorgeous, especially for this dress!!!! And you did a wonderful job considering the problematic fabric! The fit is amazing too!

Very pretty! I’ve downloaded the pattern too, haven’t tried it though. I think it looks wonderful without a petticoat, very modern, but a petticoat would probably give it a more vintage:ey look…

cute! i downloaded/printed this pattern too. though i think that i might leave the bodice as is for a practice run…..the bodice seam may not be so bad…..

I love the victoria and albert museum! I’ve just recently used their website to look at all sorts of textiles for an art history project. I’m going to have to look at the uploaded pattern. The fabric you chose is pretty, too bad it made so much trouble for you. I like the pockets! Nice and big to keep snacks in :) (Just kidding? Nah, not really…I would keep snacks in there.) Nice drafted bodice, too.
