Burda Style For people who sew
Description
It is not without incident that this dress was born.
It evolved from half a metre of stunning guipure lace that came to me in a dream was salvaged from a sea of bargain hunting fabric mongrels at the annual clegs remnant sale on boxing day. A week later I still break out into a sweat and feel phantom pain in my arms (from being constantly elbowed by other fabric enthusists) when ever I see the word ‘Sale’ flash up on my TV screen.
I once again embraced my new found fancy for elastic waists, and thoroughly enjoyed giving my pattern skills a good practise with this self-drafted dress.
This dress was christened ‘The Survivor’ as the lace I purchased from the sale and used on this dress managed to evade the sharpened claws of the other fabric junkies to be united with me and my beating heart.

Julia this dress is divine and I think congratulations are in order!! I also think you are so brave to have left home and gone to the Boxing Day sales!!! The thought of going shopping on Boxing Day gives me the creeps but if I had found that piece of guipure lace, I too would have been thrilled and also felt like a survivor.

Oh my god Julia, I’m really running out of superlatives to throw at you. I can’t believe this is from a self-drafted pattern. Except that I can believe it, because it’s you after all. Is any of the material from the pattern drafting class you took (ha, I know because I read your featured member interview ;) ) available online by any chance? I took a ‘fashion design’ course here and it was a major letdown. Didn’t learn anything new or useful.
About the dress: It is beautiful and humbling at the same time. My stomach reacts to it in a way that makes me feel as if I’m 15 years old again and the most beautiful girl in school walks by. Being utterly speechless in awe of something so beautiful and seemingly from a different world.
Thank you for sharing your work. Next time somebody asks me who my favorite designer is, I’ll tell them it’s you :)
