This is my anthropologie knock off skirt! I pulled out my craft scissors and glue and figured out how to make these awesome pockets (for a full how-to, click here and then tweaked a straight skirt pattern, adding a fly front, waistband and funky hem shaping. Yay skirt!

These kinds of pockets are easy to do with a lot of practice. What impresses me here is the stitching…if you notice it gets smaller around the corners….which is what the creative seamstress will do to get around those corners correctly. Yes, as you approach a corner, decrease stitch length until you’re almost at 0. Once you’re around the corner, increase gradually. Most won’t notice the shorter stitch length, just the fantastic pocket! I’ve thought of doing this kind of pocket – basically a large buttonhole – in the shape of a pair of lips on jeans. I’d have red textured faux leather for the ‘lips.’ That would be hot, to paraphrase Paris Hilton.

huh – i didn’t do anything special with the stitching! other than forget to lengthen the stitch length for the tops of the pockets…I just sewed to the corner, stopped and pivoted -

I love this pocket-detail! anthropology.com is a very good inspiration ;O) I just had a look yesterday and found some shirt patterns I want to sew…
I love your skirt when you wear it with the yellow blouse, because you can sea the pockets. I also like the way you did the hem line and the parallel stitching. Grade job!!! PS: your tutorial on your blog is so easy to follow, well done

I liked the hem a lot too – and all that topstitching gave it some weight so it wasn’t so stiff.
