The Liberty

I recently submitted my PhD thesis (HURRAH!!!!) so I rewarded myself with a trip to Tessuti Fabrics in Sydney’s Surry Hills as one of my rewards. And this time I let myself look at more expensive fabrics than I normally would – including Liberty of London. They had this peacock feather-inspired print in both peacock colours and this blush and blue colour. I decided to get this colour rather than the actual peacock-blue and green fabric, because I think this colour scheme actually works really well – it’s soft and muted, elegant rather than overpowering. With the softness of Liberty cotton, I thought it was a great match.

I decided to just make a very simple skirt, so this is just a metre of fabric cut roughly in half, save for about 10cm used for the waistband. It’s simply gathered together at the top, hemmed at the bottom, and with a zipper at the side. Again, given the print and the soft weight of the fabric, I thought this style was the perfect match for it. The gathering and the fact that the skirt is a good 2 metres at the hem also makes up for the fabric being so thin. The Only drawback – it crushes so easily and takes quite a while to iron!

Material Notes

1 metre Liberty cotton
1 skirt zipper

Garment Type
Romantic, Beach
