While just one member of my family wore this dress to the prom, it was truly a group effort to get it done. My youngest sister found a beautiful and unique dress online (middle picture) but we can’t afford a $400 dress for a one night shindig….so we decided to make it. My mother made the basic dress, it is a simple skirt attached to a princess-seamed boned bodice. The sister who wore the dress found some metallic fabric at the store and determined the length and width of each of the gold ‘sequins’. Then came the long, long process of placing and attaching them to the dress – it took probably 20+ hours of both me and my sister working to complete the trim! Each had to be placed, pinned and then stitched down on each end. The ones on the tulle layer of the skirt were the worst because we couldn’t go from sequin to sequin, we had to tie off a loop at each end of each sequin so that the thread did not show through the tulle. And we added extra silver sequins and black and silver beads to the bodice for a little more sparkle. The end product was worth every last minute of effort because she looked beautiful the night of the prom!

Despite the incredible amount of work and time it took, the dress looks fantastic! I’m impressed by the sequins – I doubt I’d have the time and patience for that.
