Description

Singin’ in the Rain is probably my absolute all-time favorite movie, and the Broadway Melody dream sequence is one of my favorite scenes. So this year, I decided to be Cyd Charisse’s “lady in green” character for Halloween (and my husband was Gene Kelly’s character).
I’m not one to show much skin, so I definitely made the dress somewhat more modest so that I would actually leave the house. I also have a considerably different body shape than the beautiful Cyd Charisse, so some changes were made to have the result more flattering for my shape. Unfortunately, that means it couldn’t be completely accurate.
This was my first draping project ever and I’m quite happy with the result!!

Amazing costume, I particularly love the skirt! How did you make it?

Thanks! It was definitely trial and error and a big learning experience when it comes to draping!! The outer skirt is just a lot of strips (2 pieces 4 inches wide and 12 inches to the tip, then sewn together with 1/2" SA, turned and pressed) overlapping about 1/2" the whole way around. I made my husband do the math to figure out what size and how many :) I had two left over when I made it the whole way around so I tacked them on to two in the back. I just pinned those strips to the underskirt, basted, then attached it to the bodice. The sequins were actually the hardest part!!
