The first narrow-skirted dress I’ve made! :)
I was nervous about getting the fit right but it was much easier than anticipated.
The dress is based on McCall’s 5942 from 1961 – the skirt part is pretty much the same, I only elongated the outer back darts and made the skirt a bit shorter, but I’ve changed the bodice quite a bit: I made my version sleeveless, I cut the front bodice in one piece to avoid the front seam and cut the back bodice in two pieces because I wanted a contrasting zipper in the back instead of on the side like the pattern said. Lastly I cut a new, lower neckline and added the satin ribbon. :)
I’m quite happy with the result, and I wore it to a wedding last weekend. :)
(P.S. I hadn’t hemmed it in the pictures, only pinned it in place, so the back slit looks a bit wonky!)
Grey crepe with a slight silvery sheen.
Satin ribbon.
Recycled zipper.

So classic! The material is just perfect and makes the dress look really expensive.

Such a classy and elegant dress! And even though I normally don’t like exposed or contrasting zippers, I love this one!

Wow ! Those pleats are really great. And I like that the zipper makes a white line on the back. Great !

Thanks! :)
I thought that since both the colour and the shape is quite simple the contrasting zipper would add a bit of interest to it.

Thank you! :)
I really like the original pattern too, but wanted something a bit more dressy for this one, and since I don’t have very many patterns yet I decided to just work with what I had. ;)

This is too cute! I don’t have the courage (or patience) to try sewing a dress without a full skirt, but I admire yours! You look simply gorgeous in it :)

Thank you! :)
Usually I’m all about the full skirt, in fact I chose the narrow version of this only because I didn’t have enough fabric for a full one! But the fitted skirt was actually much easier than I had feared, I don’t know if I was just very lucky with the pattern, but I’ll definitely make this again. I have a bit of experience altering vintage dresses and have found that the key element for a good fit (for me, anyway) on a narrow dress or skirt are the back darts, so I tend to just experiment with them until I get it right. ;)
