The Garden's End

Phillip Island, ...

I bought this gorgeous 50’s-style afternoon tea dress from Harem in Fitzroy recently, and have been on a mission to try and re-create it with my own fabric. I bought the Simplicity 2591 pattern, and with a bit of modifying, made this dress. It was essentially a muslin made from a vintage sheet from the op shop.

I followed the sizing on the pack but the overall dress is way too big, especially the waist.

Material Notes

Recycled cotton

Spring, Summer
Garment Type
Classic, Preppy, Vintage

Yup – I like the fabric too! A nice find for a bedsheet! I also made a dress with this pattern – and like you – found it came up absolutely huge. I don’t know where you had the fit issues, but despite fearing I was going to have to get technical with small bust alterations etc (well beyond my beginner’s skills!), I found that crudely taking in the side seams at least 2.5cm on each side (surprisingly without detriment to the fabulous pockets), worked very well. I’ve now worn the dress quite a lot .

Now all I need to do is to work out what proper wedding-guest appropriate fabric I want to do the ‘proper’ one in. What are you planning for the post-muslin dress?

[Still no pics to show you what I mean – think I may have to buy myself a camera tripod if there are ever to be any.]

I agree with the terrible sizing – I used my measurements and according to the pattern I was a size 12 with a size 14 waist which started some alarm bells ringing. I’m going to take the waist in quiet a bit for this dress, and then make a complete size 10 in a different floral fabric. Good luck with your wedding-guest dress!

I love the fabric!! I hope that you can alter it so it fits, it would be such a waste otherwise!
