The Fabulous Forties

Vogue 1011: Semi-fitted, A-line, below mid-knee dress has shaped bodice seaming, high collarless neckline, shoulder pads, back button closing with self-fabric loops and side snap or zipper closing. A: above elbow length sleeves and self-fabric bow. B, C: full length sleeves with snap closing. C: contrast sleeve, upper, lower and back bodice.
I love the zig-zag design elements. This is the first time I worked with lapped seams, as I recall. And getting the upper point to lay flat where the left upper bodice connects was a bother – having that fabric bow to cover everything up was VERY helpful!
I just love this design and all of the bodice interest.
Because I made this many years ago, there are things I would do differently today, but I really do love this dress (although my satin clothes do not get nearly as much wear as the others).
First, this was before I found my beloved rayon seam binding. Also, the button loops on back are really small – I often need help getting them done up. This dress uses a side zipper (I substituted an invisible zip) which I would lengthen and move further up towards the armhole to make it easier to get in and out! I used to assume that since my hip measurement was wider than my bust, I should skootch the zipper down to the widest point – this does not actually make a side zipper easier to get on and off . . . I much prefer having the extra opening close to the shoulders!
As always, more pictures may be found on my blog, Lilacs & Lace.
