Description

I made a coat! Yay!

My original plan was to make a 1950’s style swing coat. But I didn’t have a pattern for one, so instead I used Butterick B5145 from 2007 as a starting point and altered it a heck of a lot to create a style inspired by the early 1960’s.

Since the shell fabric isn’t particularly heavy, I sandwiched a layer of brushed cotton between the shell and the lining for extra warmth.

The buttons are vintage ones that a sewing friend sent me. Buttons holes are bound, partially because I prefer bound button holes on coats, and partially because the buttons were too big for my sewing machines button hole foot.

Fully lined, so it slips on over winter woolly layers nicely. In-seam pockets below the waist, so that next winter (once the baby bump is gone) I have the option of wearing it cinched in with a belt I intend to make in the same fabric.

More details over on my blog

Material Notes

Shell = some sort of blend (wool? acrylic?) that I picked up second-hand
Lining = standard lining fabric
Inner layer = brushed cotton
