I’ve always wanted a sleek, basic, black wrap dress, but ready-to-wear options never work on my figure. I sewed this up in wool doubleknit using a pattern adapted from Vogue 8379, surely one of the best drafted patterns I’ve ever worked with! I graded down two sizes to a 4 (smallest size the pattern came in was 8), made a small bust adjustment, and took a lot of fullness out of the skirt to give it less flare and a sleeker silhouette, and also shortened it several inches at the hem. Black wool doubleknit is a dream to work with and is plenty soft against the skin.

The fabric of this dress drapes so beautifully, when I first saw it I thought it was a dress I’d been longing to make from ‘Pattern Magic’. Instead of a wrap it looks like it’s been twisted together.
I just re-read that & realised it sounds horrible & torturous but it’s actually quite nice. There’s a picture of it on this website…

You look stunning! Really! I like this type of dresses, for me it looks like a trench to wrap:) Great job on resizing

Very Diane von Furstenberg… From the collar to the cuffs and the shape of the skirt. Really well done, and how satisfying to be the creator of the perfect dress!

Amazing and professional job as always, love it in black. I am about to try the drafting instructions for Ulla-Maaria to make my first wrap dress, I’ll be happy if it turns out even half as great as yours :) I was going to use a printed Jersey but I think if it works out I’ll make a black one too, very chic.

I love it. I want to make a red wrap dress like the one that Vesper wears at the end of Casino Royal :) You do such lovely work!

Gorgeous! I love the look of wrap dresses, but I hate how they fly open around the hem. Your version is definitely tempting me though.

You are back! Been missing you! Love the covetted. As always beautiful work.

It’s beautiful! I love wrap dresses and this one looks gorgeous on you, especially with the adjustments and the colour (the ones shown on the envelope are way too busy for my taste). Congratulations on finally getting the thing you’ve been coveting!!! :-)

That little piece looks great! The fabric sounds lush, where do you get wool doubleknit? From a local shop, or do you have any Internet references?

Thanks! The fabric is from Mood in New York and I believe I paid $18/yard. If you don’t live nearby, you may be able to call them and have them ship it. Denver Fabrics sometimes has wool doubleknit as well, but in limited colors and I’ve never ordered any so I can’t comment on the quality. The Sophia doubleknit from fabric.com is a similar weight and drape, but in a rayon/poly blend for about $10/yard. I’ll probably use that for my next one since I’d like to have one that I can also wear in warmer months.

I love it! I’m about your size, and it’s encouraging to see the results of such an altered pattern for petite people!
