Description
This is my attempt to recreate the gorgeous Yigal Azroul coat from the movie The Devil Wears Prada. I used a 10/2003 Burda Modemagazin pattern as the basis and made a lot of big modifications to it. This was supposed to be my “next big project” and after it started coming together, it just looked awful – like something out of a bad 1960s sci-fi movie. I made some more modifications and it continued to look awful so I left it hanging in my room for weeks unfinished, a big expensive disappointment on a hanger. Then I got a message from fellow BurdaStyler JJ that said "Let’s finish our coat projects that we are not too crazy about anyway so that we won’t feel so guilty and can move on. " Very wise indeed. I still feel like it looks kind of weird and doesn’t have the elegance of the original- please offer your suggestions for improvement!

I don’t know anything about the original version you based your coat on but your version is very beautiful. I would love to make myself a long version of this to wear in Canada when i visit there (definitely won’t work here in Saudi in the heat.)

Hey!!! That coat is simply awsome!!! I’m actually willing to buy one of those, my girlfriend saw on the movie and felt in love for it… and I want to get it for her as a X-mas present this year… have to wait till then, we live in Mexicali, Mexico (120 *F)…
May I have any place where I can buy one?? I just got the first clue that this is the right gift, her name is Elayne, just like yours but with a “Y” insted of “I”…
Thanks a lot!!!

It doesn’t get any more elegant than this… that second picture where the collar is up and you’re looking off to the side…WOW!

The coat rocks. Wear that baby with pride. You are an amazing seamstress. I would say that, based on the pix, there are 3 basic differences… 1) the seam/dart in the front hits the collar on hers but the shoulder seam on yours so her gives more of a vertical impact visually, drawing the eyes up, thus elongating her. 2) seems like she has shoulder pads you might have them, but maybe they are smaller. 3) she is Ann Hathaway and her body is different, so whatever she wears is going to hang differently than it would on you.

The angel wears elainemay!
PS: Is this were sewing-challenged novices like me break down and start sobbing for they cannot yet aspire to such classy outfits but have to make due with summer dresses?! :(

It’s the Anne Klein coat, right? I’ve made this in Linen some years ago and it was my favourite summer coat. I really like your version!

Trés Bien! A lovely coat.

The only difference I can see is the front seams. There are two extra in the original version that run down the very front of the coat. Besides that, it’s spot on! It looks amazing!

I don’t think it’s awful at all. It definitely evokes the original, but at the same time you’ve made it your own. Which I think is a lot harder to do and more admirable than straight copying. Nice work!

I think it looks great and white looks SOO good on a coat! I just gotta have one thesedays. But comparing the original, personally I think the difference might be the neckline is wider on your version? But I think it looks great, very stylish!

It looks gorgeous! I’m already looking forward for your next creation!

Fantastic job! I also flipped between the original and your coat to see the reason you are critical but I couldn’t figure it out. Your coat is missing one seam at center front in comparison to the original, but I have to say I like your version better, yours is more … “clean”.

Your version is sooooo close to the original, but guess what, I like yours better! Your version has a more elegant fit! Bravo!

I looked at the pictures and thought: AMAZING!!!
then I read you description, and still can’t figure out what you see wrong in this.
It is simply SIMPLY SO GORGEOUS SIMPLE AND ELEGANT!!! I love it! wish I could wear something like that in Florida….

It’s a fabulous creation once again. Does not come close to the word “weird-looking” at all! It has a sort or clean and elegant feeling to it. Too bad I can’t wear coats here :(

I flipped back and forth that first and last picture a total of no less than 10 times. You could fool me anytime with your Prada knockoff. That’s a beautiful coat.

Beautiful coat. The simple lines add elegance to your creation. You will be the Snow White of Aachen this winter.
