Description

The Coat of Insults
Embroidered garment

The project is based on the ancient Native American ritual as described in a book “Running with the Wolves” by Clarissa Pincola Estes. This ritual was performed by women who wished to liberate themselves from psychological scars by stitching insults and images concerning their difficult memories on the long coat. In my interpretation of the ritual I addressed the issues from my childhood. This project required a great deal of technical experimentation for me – I combined beadwork with acrylic paint and different textures. I also used recycled clothes to reinforce the idea that I re-cycle feelings/memories.

Thank you, I believe I too will make one. We all need to liberate ourselves from our self images made in the past that hold us down.
