the almost didn't happen denim moss mini
Added Sep 29, 2013
After making my Kelly skirt, I was really hankering for a straighter skirt. I wanted something less cutesy. Even though I am pear shaped, I defied the rules (ha!) and decided to make the Grainline Studio Moss Mini. I had a little bit of denim left (only 0.3 metres left uncut plus a bit) and was able to squeeze this skirt out of it! It is pure luck that this skirt even exists! I had some other (cheap) bull denim that I was originally going to use but I’m so glad I made it in this fabric.
I was a bit apprehensive about making this because I was worried about fitting a skirt to my hips. I have some love handle action going on so I felt this skirt could really go either way. What made me less worried was the fact that Grainline patterns are really well drafted! Also, so many people have made this and it always looks fabulous and professional. This really is a great pattern.
In Grainline sizing, my waist is a 10 and hips are a 12. I measured the waistband piece and decided to make a straight 12 in the mini length. I’m glad I did! I think the fit is pretty spot on. Many bloggers have noted that the mini length is scandalously short on them. I didn’t find this, but I think that I just have short legs! For reference, I’m 5’ 6" (sorry about using both imperial and metric! We’re a bit caught in the middle in Canada.)
The only pattern modification I made was to stitch a slightly shorter length of twill tape between the skirt front and the pocket facing to keep the pockets from standing away from the skirt. I think this worked pretty nicely, although I have my hands in my pockets in every photo so you can’t tell from the photos! Gotta do something with those hands in them pictures.
