Apfelbluete made a petticoat for you.
The one important thing is: use some special petticoat fabric but never use tulle!!! Tulle will become flabby and soft after the first washing. Instead of special petticoat fabric, you may also use organza or chiffon.
We bought our special petticoat fabric here
This petticoat is really sooo simple to make!
Note: It is made of two layers and each layer consists of three tiers. The top which is not gathered is made of different fabric, you can use taffeta or cotton. In the waist there is an elastic.
There are lots of pictures in our instructions which explain the construction.
This petticoat of our project was send to a friend of apfelbluete and she says: Wearing it she feels not like a princess – but like a QUEEN! :-)
petticoat fabric, organza or chiffon
taffeta or cotton for the waist part

Hello JadeNew,
Did you download the Pattern PDF as well as the Instructions PDF? I tested the 2 downloads and found the cutting layout on the Pattern PDF (it isn’t really a full pattern but the necessary dimensions and layout to draft your own).
I hope this helps.
Best,
BSS

I made a petticoat using this pattern. The technique is so great to give it the double layer fullness. I modified measurements for my size. I just love how it came out. It works beautifully with my vintage circle skirts and dresses.

Could you use tulle if you handwashed it? I’ve read that tulle does fine with handwashing and sun drying.

Hi ! Sorry for my English ! I have began your very beautiful Katjusha and I want to make the petticoat ! But I make it in cotton. That’s a choice for the style of the ensemble (I want something personal and master :) ). So, I have a question : With Cotton, I think that your measure are very big. 13m40 ( ? inch) at the diameter (severe…) !!! How can I made this with a cotton ? (I know, that couldn’t be the same, but something like this.) I have thinking that 6m70 is enough for the total ? Could I sew only 3 tiers (1m55, 3m35, 6m70) + the waistline? And so, made only one seam. For the moment, my dress is 4m80. What do you thinking about ? I congratulate you for your work and I hope that you understand me ! I’m waiting about your answer ! Thank You !

Hello! Thanks for this awesome tutorial. I have one question: If i am shortening this for a just above the knee dress i am making, should i take off the last layer or just shorten each panel?

I can’t wait to try this. I’m in the middle of a dress that is crying out for a 50s-style petticoat. And I had no idea there is special petticoat fabric!

That’s amazing! If I get hold on some proper petticoat fabric, this tutorial will be very helpful! Wearing petticoats makes one feel so elegant!

Great tutorial! But, what exactly is “special petticoat fabric”? Thanks!

Petticoat fabric has special properties. Its a 100 % Polyamide. That is soft to the skin and does not lose the fit.
It is also in extended-wear rigid. The tulle is very scratchy on the skin and losses very quickly its volume.

I have a quick question. If i wanted to size this down to say a childs size. Do you have any particular method that you use to determine the length and width for each tier?

Sep 18, 2010, 10.25 AMby apfelbluete
what length should the petticoat have ?
what width for the hip should i consider for your child ?
I suggest a different model for your kid. you can do it in one hour.
here is a picture tutorial how to do it.it is although in russian, but the pictures describe it.

Excellent, but oh, how I wish you were around when I was a teen. (That would have been from 1958, on.) I wore the stiff net-with-ribbon-edging petticoats. Two got those full skirts out there! One minor detail; they made one itch like grasping nettles, even if the ribbon didn’t come away in washing. Net itches. I am sizing this down for the #2 granddaughter, who wishes, “To be a real PRINCESS, Grandma.” No Disney sweeties for this one. (Good Girl) Most cordially, Nehmah
