Recently, I had some fruitful (no pun intended) op-shop adventures and purchased this lovely bright tangerine cotton sateen (?) I’m not sure exactly what type of fabric it is but it is quiet sturdy, yet manages to drape well. It also has a subtle lustre and sheen and an interesting intermittent grainwise texture. Luckily, I also came across a dress zipper that exactly matched the fabric colour, at an another op shop on my travels! And of course, I already had more than a few op-shop sourced sewing patterns in my stash.
I chose this fantastic retro ‘Very Easy Very Vogue’ pattern (circa 1993) and I made Skirt B (see last pic) : a knee-length, semi-fitted, slightly tapered skirt with waistband, front pleated overlay and concealed side hemline slit. I have previously made Greenie’s overlap skirt from leftovers from the same pattern but for that version,I inserted an exposed zipper with metal teeth instead of a dress zipper. At that time, I thought the green skirt felt a bit "corporate” but I think this less structured, more flowing cotton sateen moves it towards smart casual. No alterations to the pattern this time – dress zipper and medium skirt hook and eye used as suggested on pattern notes.
In the photos, I am wearing this skirt with my Sorbetto with lace cap sleeves top which I made earlier this year. This is a fun, bright and unique skirt to glam up my summer days!
(?) cotton sateen (tangerine) 90cm wide ($5.00 for approx 2.5 metres from the op-shop) interfacing; dress zipper (50c from another op-shop); medium skirt hook and eye; thread;
Pattern notes also suggest wool crepe, tissue faille and challis.

It’s a great word, I love the way it rhymes!
op shop: short for opportunity shop aka thrift shop, charity shop.
