I made this gown for a design competition earlier this year (which I didn’t win). Designers were instructed to submit sketches to enter the contest, and the top 10 designers were selected, based on their sketches, to make what they sketched for a runway competition.
I made the silver trim by hand, pleat by pleat, using a continuous strip of bias cut from silk Duchess satin. The side seams don’t go straight up the sides, but rather from the side back up to the side hip, where they curve to the front (offering a perfect place for pockets) and then back into a semi-spiral at the upper sides.
* Silk dupioni in an antique pink color
* Silk Duchess satin in a silver/gray color (pleated trim)
* Polyester Taffeta in cream (lining)
* Horeshair braid (hem)
* Rigeline boning
* Invisible zipper

This is awesome, and very inspiring. And thanks so much for also posting one of your design drawings! We could use more of these on the web site when people do their own designs. This is wonderful.

OMG! Girl, you make me feel so small :) I have to admit – this dress would be a perfect wedding gown (and I usually hate wedding gowns, but this one I would wear with pleasure!)

This gown is absolutely stunning. The judges were blind not to have picked your design. You did an awesome job in every detail.

Wow—Thanks everyone!
It was a lot of work, but worth it. I love how it turned out. I even brought this dress (and this model) with me to my last Project Runway audition, and it received rave reviews from Tim and Nick (though it didn’t earn me a spot on the show) :)
I guess I’ll have to do something a little more “out there” next time …
