I love the TV show Glee. In one of the episodes of the third season the girls were wearing these georgeous retro bathing suits and I immediately wanted one.
I was overjoyed when I realized how similar these bathing suits were to the Alison pattern here on burdastyle!
I first made a test piece out of regular jersey and had to adjust the length of the torso slightly, then I made the suit out of navy blue lycra. The stripy insert at the front is actually just regular jersey doubled with white lycra so it doesn’t get see-through. It takes a little bit longer to dry, but I couldn’t find white and red striped bathing suit fabric anywhere. I’m planning on making the little skirt as well (so cute!) but I didn’t have the time before my holiday and now it’s definitely autumn here in Germany and I won’t need the bathing suit for quite a while…
With the small pattern adjustments the Alison pattern is really great and I will probably make another one for next year!

I printed it at 100%. That should leave a bit of space at the edges of the paper to glue them together.

Great job, this suit is so well made and it suits you so well! I’m planning to make my own retro swimsuit, too, one day, but for now I’m still horrified thinking of sewing swimsuit fabric.

It isn’t any different from sewing jersey or other knits. I have been terrified of those for quite a while but with a well adjusted overlock machine it’s super quick and easy! Be brave! ;)

It’s really not as bad as confused and/or angry voices on the forums say :) Just go for it! Next summer will hopefully be here soon!
