Description

I saw a trench coat at Anthropologie that I absolutely adored, but it was out of my price range. I set to designing something similar using this trench coat as my inspiration and the lovely Hikaru jacket pattern as my base design.

To make this jacket, I altered the Hikaru pattern substantially. I used size 42 for the bust, 40 for the waist, and 44 for the hip. I also moved up the waist line seam 4 inches so that it would sit at my natural waist for a more flattering fit. This was the first project that I decided to spend the time to do a muslin, and I’m really glad I did! I found the HIkaru pattern fit quite large, so I had to do the muli-size alterations so that it was a better shape for me.

I added a storm flap with a pleat to the back of the jacket, and a storm flap connected to a ruffle at the front. It took me a while to get the ruffle just right – it’s basically a circle with the front storm flap shape attached on top, so to visualize the pattern piece was a little confusing at first! It took me about 5 tries. I also added a waist tie and waist tie holders to the waist of the jacket.

I used a silver coloured metal zipper and pewter buttons that I found off of Etsy.com. I love them!

As a finishing touch, I lined the jacket in a vintage-looking yellow floral cotton. I love surprise linings, and yellow is my current favourite colour for spring.

Overall, I am quite happy with how the project turned out. It feels beautiful to wear and it fits me quite well. It’s my perfect spring jacket!

It’s sweet but also a little bit military, what makes it perfect.

Thank you!! Wouldn’t it be neat in a chocolate brown for fall? I’m tempted to make another one in that colour. :P

Absolutely gorgeous! I’m working on my own jacket, too, and I’m really looking forward to seeing it come together (brown tweedy outer with bright mustard yellow inner!) and you know what? I kind of fell in LOVE with those buttons. Where’d you find them, and do they come in 1-1/2"?!

Wow, thanks for the kind words, all! I really appreciate them. I will try and post a little tutorial on exactly how I did the front storm flap/ruffle soon. I hope to get it up within a week. :)

This is really terrific…and I love the surprise – yellow – lining. This is well done. I can only imagine what other iterations you could make with this pattern. You would be at home walking on the streets of New York City in this trench, Christina.

Thanks so much, everyone! The ruffle was the hardest part. It was difficult to make the angle from the front storm flap to the connecting circular ruffle just right (so that it was neither too frilly nor too straight).
