For the pattern I traced a dress I already had, but made some alteration such as longer sleeves (for autumn / winter) and pleats down the lower front of the dress. This is the first time I made something with checkered fabric and unfortunately things don’t exactly line up. Does anyone have any tips on how to do that when you are also inserting darts & pleats. Seems nearly impossible. Anyhoo, even though there are a lot of little mistakes, I am quite happy with it. It is a really comfortable dress…

Cute! I’ve never made anything out of gingham before and I’ve never really thought about lining up the checks! I’ve ordered heaps of it online and now I’m a bit stressed out about lining it up! I wouldn’t worry about it too much, no one else will notice but you.

Hi guys! Thanks for the nice comments and tips on how to aline checkered fabric. I guess it is just a trial and error thing. I started off trying to lay out the pattern pieces on the fabric so that all the waistline seams would start on the same ‘colour row’ of the checkered fabric. So far so good. Then I made the pleats and darts and nothing matched anymore…aargghhh. So I guess next time I should cut one pattern piece at a time and try to line up the next pattern piece to cut with the one I already cut and made pleats it. Does that make sense? Maybe it is time to do a sewing course….

it’s a lovely dress! dschudie is right: pin, pin, pin! the more you work with plaids/checks the better and faster you’ll get.

such a lovely garnment! i can´t see any mistakes as well. i think you made a really good job. and there are no special tips for checked fabrics… best you pin every horizontal line (rapport) and then sew. at the darts the same procedure, but pay attention the lines matches in another angle. sometimes you have to move the end point of the dart a little to get them matching neat. all in all pin pin pin… its a little bit more work, but a thankful.

I love the dress – the cut of the whole dress and the neckline look so beautiful! As for the checks… I am just a beginner myself, so unfortunately I don’t know from my own experience. I read that for checks and plaids it’s best to choose fabric with as few darts and other fabric manipulation as possible, which to me seems a sound advice, but one still has to figure out how to deal with those few! ;-) Sorry that I can’t help you, but I LOVE what you did with that dress – with or without mistakes (which, BTW, I cannot really see)! :-)

I love it – it looks so good! and you really don’t notice any of the checks not matching up – it’s stunning!

Looks very good! : ) To find the little mistakes you probably need to know where they are..

A really nice dress! I love the cut, and it goes so well with the checks! I really love the collar as well, laid-back and extremely feminine at the same time. I do not have any good tips on sewing with checks though, as I’ve never dared myself… This piece of work is nevertheless very inspiring!
