This fabric from Tessuti was bought on a complete whim, basically because I loved the ridiculously bright stripes. I didn’t have any particular plan for how to make this dress, other than it would be playing with different directions in the stripes.
I didn’t use a pattern, just sketched out the pieces straight on the fabric. I decided that vertical stripes would be best for the bodice, and horizontal for the skirt. I tried it on without sleeves but it looked a bit too 80s tennis dress. I wasn’t sure what to do for sleeves, because I wanted to keep playing with directions of stripes and thought normal sleeves probably wouldn’t work. I had two triangular pieces left over from cutting out the skirt, so I decided to see how they’d work as sleeves. They looked good, with the stripes on the diagonal, so I decided to stitch in the triangles.
I had been hoping to photograph this dress on a bright sunny day, but it’s just been clouds and storms the last few days. So instead, this is on a cloudy day, contrasting to the brightness of the stripes.

a very appropriate title! i do love the bright colours too and it’s really neat what you’ve done with the stripes!

The bright colours work together really well – neither would work alone, but together, they’re just fun.
