Inspired by a mint green and black teacups skirt that I fell in love with at a boutique store in West End, lined in black, trimmed with black and white dotted fabric. I call my version of the skirt the Sunday Brunch Skirt because it’s made up in a quilting fabric by that name.
The skirt gathered down to just narrower than my hip measurement. It’s a straightforward gathered skirt and I didn’t need a pattern to cut it. It is lined with a inexpensive tan cotton/poly blend fabric. It ended up being quite heavy, but it feels better for it. Made from exactly 1.2meters of both the quilting and cotton lining (1 meter for the gathered skirt, 20cm for the waistband) and a tiny, tiny, tiny amount of black and white dots trim fabric.
The back of the skirt has an elastic section in the waistband. This was a pain to sew in an otherwise dream project, but makes it a really comfortable skirt to wear (before AND after brunch). Fabric covered buttons are there purely for decoration, the front of the skirt closes with snap fasteners.
I plan to make more of these skirts. This one is so comfortable and quilt fabrics can be so cute!
I think it looks a little bit like a 1950s apron turned into a skirt. What do you think? The strangest part of sewing it was that I started with the hem (on the outer and then again on the lining fabric) instead of ending with my hem.
1.2 meters Quilting Fabric (Sunday Brunch, patterned) 1.2 meters Lining Fabric (Poly/Cotton, plain tan) 0.2 meters - or less - Trim Fabric (Black with White Polka Dots) 15-20 centimeters wide elastic 8 metal snap fasteners 8 buttons suitable to be covered by fabric
