Summer V neck top

Added Jan 14, 2012

by katherinech

Wellington, New ...

I made this with the V neck pattern recently added, from Burda Style 12/2011. The fabric is a nice lightweight cotton, I love the bright yellow and purple on the grey background.
Got a bit stuck on the shoulder seams so I just folded in the raw edge, stitched the gathered edges together and then stitched the allowances down onto the back panel. I’m very happy with how it turned out though!

I did the same thing, made a French seam out of the gathered shoulders and stitched the seam allowance to the back. I also made a mistake when I put the facings over the garment right sides together—I didn’t line up front and back, which caused me heartache much later when I realized my mistake.

Did anyone else’s turn out humongous? The shoulders fall off of me. I’m in danger of being arrested for flashing people.

Yay it’s not just me! From the diagram it looks like you sew the front and back together at the shoulders and leave the allowances ‘standing up’, but when i did that it looked terrible! I did plenty of agonizing over the pattern for sure, but ultimately I’m the one who’ll wear it so may as well just sew it the way I want!

Oh I am so glad I found this. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read the instructions for the shoulder straps and still not made sense of them! Its great to be reassured you are not the only one! I guess I need to just bite the bullet and get on with it really. Yours is so pretty and lovely to see that it works very well in cotton.

it’s definitely the instructions! I’ve really been stumped by the shoulder instructions too! i was going to do the same thing you did!

Lovely! Looks great on you and the fabric drapes so nicely. I’m about to make this top and have been stumped with those shoulder instructions! Will probably end up doing what you did – nice to see someone else found it confusing.

Thanks! Haha must be the instructions then! On the plus side, if I get bored of those edges I can turn them under and move the twist to the back, that looks quite good too.
