Description

I found this floral fabric at an estate sale and instantly saw an adorable summer dress. I spent most of my summer looking for the right pattern (I was inspired by a few burdastyle dresses: http://www.burdastyle.com/projects/chambrilliant-summer-frock, and http://www.burdastyle.com/projects/flower-dress-made-of-recycled-materials), and finally on a trip back to good ol’ Nebraska I found it—not EXACTLY it—something I could work with.

After the project was started I realized I am an ’80s size 10, and he pattern only went down to 12. This could be compensated for if I was using the button front that the pattern includes, but I wanted something more simple. I had the brilliant idea to put in a side zipper only to realize the ones I had lying about were HUGE. So, as I tend to do when impatient, I improvised. I sewing the whole thing as a baggy size 12 then put elastic in along the back. This worked well to make the dress fit better and to give the appearance of more pleats—which I was going for, the more pleats the better.

The dress was also too long, so I did a wide hem and did my first blind hem ever! I did it by hand because of the above mentioned impatience … I’ve watched the tutorials online and cannot figure out how to do it with a machine. That day will come. Just not today.

Material Notes

Considering how light and sheer the fabric is, it’s not very breathable, but it wasn’t as bad to work with as my previous project which shed frayed strings all over the house. It was like having a cat.

Hello! Could you post the number of that pattern? I can’t quite tell from the photograph. Looks like Simplicity 7506 from the angle, but I searched for it and couldn’t find it… If there’s any other identifying info, that would be helpful, too! I really like that bodice.
