This design is a halter top with a scarf treatment that gives a subtle effect of butterfly wings. The chiffon bodice would be lined in coolmax or other comfortable, breathable fabric for performing. The color choice would be based on what species of butterfly you wish to evoke. My favorites are fiery prints like a monarch, or black and teal like a black swallowtail. The amount of detail on the halter top itself would vary with the wearer. For example, I could include small black tulle ruffles on a black bodice to enhance the bust of a performer (also giving an entomological feel to the front), or vary the placement of the scarf to enhance the figure of another.
My inspiration is last year’s butterflies wall calendar. I cut them out and taped them on the ceiling of my sewing room, just waiting for them to give me an idea.
