Project of the Week!
It is amazing how much you can get done when faced with a university assignment… stuff other than Uni, that is. A tidied house, organics composted and here we have Kathrine.
BurdaStyle really is a great place to learn. The weekly projects help build skills within time limits. For this project, I learnt which needle and stitch to use with the linen from the Sandra Betzina blog here on BurdaStyle. And this one helped me choose which thread. Especially KateXXXXXX’s comment.
The firsts in this project:
pleats, pleats and more pleats
Notes on the pattern:
Pleats
The first set of front pleats are the hardest. The second set on the front are easier as a seam forms one of the pleat lines. And the set on the back are also made easier by the seam lines. Remember to baste the pleat lines it makes it sooo much easier.
Variation
– didn’t need a zipper in the side: slips over the head just fine
– added an inch at the first lengthen line, on the neckline: arm holes a better size (for layering, too)
– understitched neckline: instead of top-stitching
– contrast check bias binding on armholes: for the inner nerd

Hi littlecottondresses, when I first saw the pattern, browsing the patterns here on BurdaStyle it didn’t really catch my eye, either. I gave it a second look when it was project of the week. When I saw the instructions suggested to use a cotton fabric, I thought ‘that would look softer!’. And, yes, the pose of the model holding out the pleats on the pattern cover makes it look baggier then it really is, you’re very right there! Thanks for your sweet comment.

Thank you, gabcorb. I think the lighter fabric suits the pattern well. And that makes it more of a summer/spring dress, which means you’ve got plenty of time to make one before next season ;)

Congratulations on getting featured member project of the week!
It is so important to be creative. It is difficult not to follow the flow when it starts racing. I am learning to discern between when it is a complete fanciful escape (read: distraction) from when it is a genuine, balanced creative expression.
Oh, and I’m happy to say, I got my assignment in on time, this time.
