Choosing striped fabric for this top wasn’t the smartest thing to do but I will wear this top as it is so comfortable and I love the neck line. I did not make the neck line as per the pattern as it becomes a v-neck at the back. I just used the neck line for the dress #107 because I don’t like the back of my neck exposed in cooler weather. An age thing!! This top is very easy to make and fits well although for my body shape, I had to raise the bust darts up about 4 cm.

I too like the neckline! It adds such nice interest. Ponti is so great to sew and wear – it’s a pity we have precious little choice in them in my parts!

Thanks so much. I am in Hong Kong at the moment and have been to a fabric market where there was so much Ponti to choose from I nearly cried! There was so much fabric and pushy sales people that it was impossible to decide. I did buy quite a bit of fabric and I am not sure if my Qantas plane will get off the runway.

Oh my, Hong Kong is the best! Did you spend days and days wandering up and down their sprawling fabric district? It’s like being in heaven. You could post the fabric back to yourself if you’ll bust the weight allowance – I nearly had to do that!

I love how the stripes on the neck/collar contrast with the stripes of the top. I’ve made a few tops from ponti knit this fall – it’s a new fabric for me and it is SOO easy to work with and super cozy for the colder weather.

I have a couple of questions about this pattern and don’t know where else to ask them. Hope you can help. Did you you use batting in the neckline? Doesn’t seem appealing to me. Once you add seam allowances, the shoulder cut out v in the pattern pretty much disappears. Am I doing something wrong? Haven’t tried to sew it yet, but the pattern now looks much different. The front dart from the side seems very wonky. Any tips there?
Thanks

1. No, I did not use batting or interfacing in the neckline as the Ponti fabric has plenty of body. I did not make the neckline as the pattern shows as I did not want the v-shape at the back.
2. When you cut out the shoulder V shape after adding seam allowance it does disappear but if you mark the pattern shape onto your fabric with either tacking stitches or by using a fabric marking pen, then it is easy to pin and sew. Use only a water based pen so that the markings can wash away and do the markings on the wrong side of the fabric.
3. Also mark the front darts in the same way and you will find that everything turns out okay.
If you are new to sewing, I wouldn’t recommend the stripped fabric I used to make this top as the stripes will not match up and it can be disappointing. Just use a plain fabric to start and you will find it relatively easy to sew. It is a lovely top to wear and I will probably make this again – next time in a plain Ponti. Good luck with your top.

I love this pattern and what you´ve made with it. I love stripes too, so it´s perfect! What about those darts! I´m planning to sew the dress that have those darts and I´m a little bit scared of them.

Merche, you are too talented to be scared of those darts! It is the easiest top/dress to sew. Thank you for your lovely comments.

I have had plenty of time up my 3/4 sleeve lately, and my Bernina has been getting a workout! I am going to be ready for the summer heat ASAP.

Great top and I think stripes were a great choice – it’s a great twist on a Breton top! Like the neckline too.

Thank-you Debbie. I love stripes, so I was prepared to be challenged with the front darts. Otherwise , this top would be perfect for stripes if it didn’t have the darts which give it such a good fit.

Thanks Mary, you are very sweet. I will make some navy Ponti pants next week to match and then the top will really stand out.
