Steam-Punk Work Wear Waistcoat

Carlisle, United...

For this year’s museums at night event Tullie House Museum in Carlisle are holding a steam-punk circus and I’m running a fancy dress life drawing activity. I thought it important to dress the part but as I’ll be running around like a crazy thing I decided I needed something practical so I thought I’d make a steam-punk inspired waistcoat. I’m planning to team it with some lace arm-warmers and possibly some spats to complete the look and I’m hoping for a top hat! I used a pattern from burda style and just made a few alterations; namely removing the tab from the back and inserting velvet loops for lacing instead and changing the front closure to a brooch rather than buttons. I used a thick cotton twill and a pretty bird print then used velvet and satin ribbon for the lace up back.

Material Notes

Cotton twill (main)
Printed cotton (lining)

Garment Type
Steampunk, Victorian, Vintage

Very cute. I’ve been thinking of making this pattern.

Oh, and you might be interested in this free pattern for a mini top hat –

Oooo! Thank you, that is very cool. I can see my plan for a productive work day going out the window but on the plus side I’ll have a mini top hat!

I found the pattern quite easy to follow and I like the shape of it.
