Description

This project is based on the Burda Side Button-Up Cape 09/2015 115A. I had a really hard time finding pre-quilted insulated fabric online, and finally found this black, perforated quilted fabric on the Mood website. It’s actually made of three separate layers: a white backing, a water repellent and clear lining, and a black laser cut face.

Because of the lining, it doesn’t drape super easily, but it does give the piece a really cool sheen. I made a few adjustments: re-drew the slope of the shoulders (the original pattern made me look like a football player), added a black jersey lining, finished the inside seams with bias tape, shortened the hem by a few inches, lengthened the “sleeves” (because the weight of the fabric was creating a buckle on the arm), and attached just one snap at the top of the collar and upper chest area. Sometimes the “simplest” patterns require the most modifications ;p

You are so right with your last sentence…I too find myself taking unwarranted adjusting/sewing time on basic patterns – I glad to know I’m not the only one. Great piece and perfect name for it too. Congrats on being featured.

Thanks, SeamRacer! I’m so attracted to “simple” patterns, but it’s taken some time to become more confident in my editing decisions. I didn’t realize my project was featured until I read your comment-haha. Congrats on being featured too- what a lovely dress!
