Description

I’ve been wanting a white eyelet dress for ages and ages so I finally decided to make one for my family trip to Florida. Unfortunately, when I got to the fabric store they didn’t have any eyelet in white, only black (?!), but luckily I found this instead. It’s off-white with a horizontal pattern of wavy lines and flowers. It was pretty thin so I got the saleslady to recommend something to line it with. She directed me towards and even thinner (and just as expensive) cotton gauze (I think? I don’t know. it’s a little stretchy and very, very thin) that I was iffy on, but I decided to go for it. It’s still a little thinner than I’d like but once I get back to Portland I can just wear a slip under it. Unfortunately it’s so thin that you can kind of see the seam allowances along the neckline and the midriff section, but I’ve decided not to worry about it.

The pattern I used is McCall’s 5094. I’ve had my eye on it for ages, but it’s pretty basic so I wasn’t sure if I’d ever buy it… but of course I finally caved at the last JoAnn’s sale. It came together super fast—at least by my standards. I did most of the work on my day off and then took awhile longer to hand-pick the zipper and then hem it. But still, very fast. I’ll probably make some minor adjustments for fit if I make it again (very likely—I love this style of dress!) but it worked pretty well straight out of the envelope. The only change I made this time was to interface the midriff section.

Material Notes

2 yards of embroidered cotton and 2 more yards of cotton for lining

I love the look of this pattern and am glad to see it fits SOMEONE. I made myself a dress from this pattern and it just DOES NOT FIT my body type. My waist is just too short to pull it off. But it looks GREAT on you. Yay.

I think the dress looks great! The off-white may even work better for your skin tone than real white would.

I think you should definately make more dresses from this pattern. There are just so many options with it: How about a contrasting fabric at that midriff section? Stripes used in different directions? Or even connecting a different skirt to that bodice?

Cute dress! I love the pattern. Even if it isn’t eyelet, it is still a nice fabric.
