It was Friday, and I had tickets to the theatre for Sunday evening, with nothing to wear. I wanted a fast easy project that would result in a cute little spring dress perfect for a semi-dressed up date. However, the weather was supposed to be cold and rainy, so I needed a dress that I could wear with a sweater. I had this navy blue sweater from J.Crew (by way of a thrift store, $6) that had white and light green satin bias tape binding the edges and little green and white flowers on the front. It has hook and eye closures on the front. I decided that the sweater would match this leftover green material I had used in another failed project, and then used the darker satin as contrast on the ruffle and the hem.
When I was printing the pattern, I ran out of ink and I was not able to print the bottom of the bodice pattern pieces, so I drew them on free hand by looking at the PDF. I made some errors there, as the bust dart ends way too high (trying to figure out if I can adjust it without taking the entire dress apart). This is also a tiny bit too tight on me, but that is most likely due to my drafting errors. I downloaded the original size 32 pattern, which is my exact size. I have an overly large rib cage, which makes this fit look sort of awkward as it is so tight in the bodice. Note that the fitting error is mine, the pattern is well drafted.
The fabric - ugg. I don't know what it is, it feels like a satin, but it has this weird quilted texture - it is definitely several layers woven in a 3-dimensional way so that it has a lot of texture and a stiff body. It does not sew up well - seams are bulky and darts do not like to lie flat. Also, the edges unravel, so I had to do French seams on all of the vertical seams, and I could not trim the darts to get them to be less bulky. It also wrinkles easily, as you can see in the photos. I love the color, however. I used a contrasting green satin for the facings, half of the ruffle, bias tape for the hem.

This is ADORABLE … haha, I just noticed someone else said the exact thing! Well, it’s probably the smartest match I’ve seen. Lovely!
