Spotty wide skirt

A skirt with wide waistband – I copied the pattern from another skirt I’d bought that my bicycle had chewed up. Although wide, it’s not quite a circular skirt. The deep waistband has a facing made from some pink quilting cotton I had lying around.

The material has quite a bit of stretch so before I hemmed it I made my long-suffering husband hand-wash it and let it drip-dry for the bias to set. Good job too – one side dropped by almost 2"!

For the hem, I used an overlocker to finish the edge and then turned up just the width of the over-locking and machine stitched it in place, just over 1/4" away from the fold. I was concerned about whether this would be too bulky but it seems that the fabric is lightweight enough for it to still hang well. Result!

Sorry for the uninspiring photography – I’m saving my spare time for the sewing part!

Material Notes

Lightweight spotted needlecord & grey lining fabric. For the waistband, black sew-in interfacing and pink spotty quilting fabric.

Great skirt, and great fabric! I wanted to make such a skirt for quite a while, too, but I am still looking for the fabric for it! (The only dotted fabrics I can find around here at the moment are coated ones for raincoats.) Your skirt shows me that I should continue searching!
