My second rendition of this deliciously simple free downloadable Tonia Cape pattern from Fitzpatterns . This winter, I have enjoyed wearing my first creation from the same pattern, my khaki cape , so when I heard that my good friend was having trouble finding warm coats that could cover her pregnant belly, this cape pattern immediately came to mind.
The pattern is easy to print and assemble, and also easy to follow. The cape in the pattern is not lined but I lined this cape with a lovely cotton polka dot. I lengthened the cape slightly to ensure the baby bump would be covered and warm. It took a bit of effort to ensure that the checks matched and the overall cape was symmetrical. I used 3 big navy buttons and spaced them out further than last time, so that the cape would not splay open to expose the baby belly to the winter cold. I matched the navy buttons with a navy bias binding to cover the raw edge on the inside of the hemmed cape. I also top-stitched around the collar edge and the cape edge. I think she likes it :-) (see pics 5 and 6)
This cape pattern has proven to be very versatile: warm, stylish and… …suitable for pregnant friends!
Outer: Wool blend flannel, charcoal; Lining: Country garden cotton #3 dot, white; lightweight interfacing; bias binding; buttons; thread
