Description
For this jacket, I started with a great trench coat pattern from the Nov 2012 issue of Burda Magazine. It is a classic style with a lean silhouette, princess seams (great for fitting) and classic trench details. Because I was making it with an allover lace fabric, I omitted most of the details to allow the fabric to be the star. I shortened it to a mid-thigh length and made small fit adjustments. The jacket is unlined but is made of three layers: soutache lace, silk taffeta (underneath lace) and silk organza (underlining underneath taffeta). I made covered snaps and sewed buttons on the front so there was no need to make buttonholes. The greatest challenge was aligning the pattern pieces on the lace to make sure the beautiful scallops would be placed properly along the hem and CF edges. t
Material Notes
Soutache lace fabric (main fabric)
Silk taffeta (base for lace fabric)
Silk organza (underlining, bias strips for seam finishing)
Scrap silk/cotton batiste (pockets, shoulder pad covering)

whow, you made a really wonderful trench. I read the instructions to this pattern in the burdastyle magazine and thought it was too difficult for me. you are so right about omitting/interchanging those details.

Thank you! I think a good tailoring reference book would help you tackle a project like this. I definitely wouldn’t rely just on the magazine instructions, as they can get confusing. I like the Tailoring: Classic Guide to Sewing the Perfect Jacket.

Thanks! Yes, I fell in love with the lace when I saw it — different from the laces that you normally see in stores.
