Awhile back pambox and I were invited to the wedding of one of our high school friends. I vaguely thought I should make a dress, since it’s a winter wedding and all my wedding-appropriate dresses are sleeveless. Then I thought nothing else about it until i bought an incredibly beautiful necklace made of vintage watch parts (by Markntime Jewellery, based in Perth, if anyone’s interested) and decided I wanted a dress that would match it.
Part of the necklace is a pretty blue watch face, so that made up my mind on the colour. I really like all the lace dresses that have been in stores over the summer, so that made up my mind on the fabric. And I love a spinny skirt, so that decided the style!
The pattern was a combination. I took the bodice and sleeves from Simplicity 2180, which I also used for my The Stars dress. Instead of cutting separate pieces for the contrast neck band, I overlapped the pattern pieces so I had a plainer bodice. The skirt is just a circle skirt, from Butterick 4114.
Fabric is some light blue lining from Tessuti’s $10 a roll clearance bin, and is exactly the colour I’d wanted. Nice find! The lace is from Spotlight. I wasn’t sure how much I’d need, so I went with 4m. That turned out to be a conservative estimate, and I had to go back and get another metre. If I’d not done sleeves, the 4m would have been plenty.
Please ignore the smudge on the sleeve photo. It was raining and we got a raindrop on the lens and didn’t notice. My photoshop skills are not up to removing a smudge, so it remains. Photos are by pambox, as usual.
