This is one of my garments for my collection called, “For the Pleasures of Searing Water.” The collection was for our student show this year and the theme was “The Movies.” I was inspired by the movie (And book), “Memoirs of a Geisha.” I wanted to take Geisha history and motifs and apply them with modern contemporary western fashion trends.
This wedding dress is inspired by the kimono that Sayuri wears in her debut dance. The original kimono featured a high/low kimono with a long trail and red/white color palette. I decided to do wedding dress that was untraditional and followed the high/low trend. I lined the dress with red, draped a bodice that overlapped at the armscyes and was gathered at the shoulders.
The belt was created by pleating silk dupioni to create an obi belt. Red ribbon was then overlapped under a front red belt loop and then tied into a bow at the back.
The veil was also created by me and I wanted a birdcage veil with cherry blossoms that I created by using watercolor paint on silk dupioni. During the runway presentation, I had placed silk that I finely cut up into snow inside the umbrella. So at the finale portion when she opened it, it snowed just like the movie.
