Description

This is one of my garments for my collection called, “For the Pleasures of Searing Water.” The collection was for our student show this year and the theme was “The Movies.” I was inspired by the movie (And book), “Memoirs of a Geisha.” I wanted to take Geisha history and motifs and apply them with modern contemporary western fashion trends.

This wedding dress is inspired by the kimono that Sayuri wears in her debut dance. The original kimono featured a high/low kimono with a long trail and red/white color palette. I decided to do wedding dress that was untraditional and followed the high/low trend. I lined the dress with red, draped a bodice that overlapped at the armscyes and was gathered at the shoulders.

The belt was created by pleating silk dupioni to create an obi belt. Red ribbon was then overlapped under a front red belt loop and then tied into a bow at the back.

The veil was also created by me and I wanted a birdcage veil with cherry blossoms that I created by using watercolor paint on silk dupioni. During the runway presentation, I had placed silk that I finely cut up into snow inside the umbrella. So at the finale portion when she opened it, it snowed just like the movie.

Thank you very much! I do have a soft spot for this one because it was my first “Bridal” dress. I wanted to show my views on Bridal, which are not always “Conventional/Traditional.” :)

oh beutiful!,I love that film too also love the book the tale of murasaki which is full of descriptions of kimono, how they look how they feel how they are decorated, a totally inspiring dress and idea because it would work in any combination of colours so works in every direction not just weddings! well done you!

Even though I’m not a big fan of asymmetrical garments, I have to say that this dress is really very beautiful. I love the soft line of the asymmetric dip hem and how smoothly it flares. The red lining was a wise choice give that touch of elegance and chicness to the design. And the snow flakes! What an original detail! I love it. All the garment from your “For the Pleasures of Searing Water” collection are beautiful but this one is really special for the details (the red lining, the belt, the asymmetry, the V shaped neckline, etc.) A dress to die for.

Thank you so much, Helga! I have to say it is probably my favorite out of the collection too. I love all the looks but this one cast a particular spell over me. At first I worried the details were too simple but women have really responded to it and I learned. :)

this is very nice, because of the contrasting red linning. the top is simpel but eye catching. good work!
