Description

Puffy sleeve T-shirt made from a Paul Smith remnant. I made the pattern from my own basic t-shirt-pattern that I changed to make a boat-neck-neckline, and JJ’s Leg of Mutton Top-sleeve. I had to change the sleeve quite a bit to keep the stripes unbroken, so I gathered it at the bottom too, I’m pleased with the result… phew :-)!

Material Notes

Cotton and wool knit (apperently a Paul Smith remnant, as I mentioned, either way it's suuuper soft and comfortable!)

I just tore a page out of the latest issue of Elle because they featured a top I thought I would try to recreate for myself. I searched boat neck here on BS to get some guidance and found your Tee. You wouldn’t believe how similar it is to the one I saw in Elle! Stripes, puff sleeves and all. You really have to check it out ( May 2010, pg. 24) . I think I even prefer your version. Looks great.

Wow, that’s so cool :-)! I’ll have to check it out. The US version of Elle is one of my favourite magazines, btw… thanks for tipping me off!

Hi, I was wondering if you could upload the basic tee pattern you based this shirt off of. I’ve been looking EVERYWHERE for a basic tee shirt pattern, but it seems that no one makes them… I’m new to sewing, so I want to make something really easy with no darts or any such difficult things. Perhaps, after some experience, I can venture to attempt the other patterns you’ve already uploaded… they’re all so pretty! Thanks!

Hi! The best thing, really (and how I made my basic tee-pattern) is to copy a t-shirt that fits you well. Simply flatten it on a big piece of paper, and trace its outline. Copy the backpiece first. When you’ve traced the outline all around it, fold the pattern in half (lengthwise) and draw a new line between those of the two halves (they will differ slightly) and you’ve got your back-piece. To make the front-piece, copy the back and trace the front neckline based on your favourite tee (the front and back are often identical in tees, except for the neck-line). And voila, a pattern that fits you :-). The side-seams should be of the same length in the back and front, and also the shoulder-seams.
If you’re all new to sewing I recommend you to get a basic sewing-technique-book, I have a few, I still use them and they are a GREAT help when I try new things (like cuffs).
      Good luck!

You did a beautiful job putting together this shirt, making the choices you did in order to reach your vision. Like all your creations, this one also has class. Fresh yet timeless. I love your style.
