Description

I meant to make only the top from Simplicity 2594, but I had too much scrap fabric and couldn’t justify stashing it so I added a paneled drop skirt. The skirt consists of simple trapezoids: 6 print panels plus 4 solid red panels for a total of 5 in the front and 5 in the back. I also added side seam pockets with the scrap.

At least I started off with an effort to make more basics, but it seems I can’t avoid making dresses.

The fabric is a Ghanaian brand (Da Viva) but I bought it in Benin. The fabric is stiff, so I soaked it in a bucket of water for a day to soften it up so the neckline would drape nicely. Otherwise there was major poofage around the chest.

I volunteer in an art and music school in Benin, so that explains the background: it’s student work in my classroom.

I wrote more in my sewing journal here: http://cathywu.com/journal/treadling/2013/05/04/simplicity-2594-top-a-scrap-panels-another-drop-waist-dress/

I really like this dress. How clever to use your scrap fabric. The fabric is awesome!
