Made two ties for the two most important men in my life: my dad and my soon-to-be-husband! Its really for the upcoming wedding. Used pattern and tutorial from here:
http://sewing.craftgossip.com/tutorial-sew-dad-a-tie-for-fathers-day/2009/05/21/
except i used sewing machine instead of hand sewing.
My fiance loves it! my dad, being a grandson of a professional tailor/owner of one of shanghai’s big fashion industry back in the day, liked it, but told me that REALLY fancy ties does not have iron marks on the side, and should look less flat than that. darn! so maybe another try later on!

I actually tried to make these ties using the same tutorial before, and it came out wayyy too stiff! Without the sew in interfacing, it was too floppy. Maybe I just need to use a different interfacing? Or fabric inside? Also, my boyfriend told me that usually ties are thinner at the “wrong” end. I told him I would try to fix/finish them, but they’ve been sitting in the corner of my room for about a year now.
What did you use inside the tie? I know it’s hard to describe thickness of facing, but if you could compare it to a type of fabric, that would be great!

Wow, these ties look amazing! I’ve been really wanting to make a tie for my dad, too. This post could be just the incentive I need to make one.

good job… did you know there is a tie pattern on here. I printed it out, but haven’t made it there yet. Congrats on getting married soon. I wish I sewed when I was getting married. We all learn from our mistakes. Just remember not to take it personally..luckily my dad only knows tshirt and jeans and how to make macaroni and cheese:)

The tie looks awesome! I recently knitted a tie, and it was the most boring thing I have ever knitted. I have some awesome flocked fabric that I would like to make a tie with for my man, but it seems like intimidating origami! I’ll have to look at the tutorial you posted!

The men are going to look so dapper! Sounds like your dad is a tough critic, but that just means he’s helping you learn, right?!
Oh, and congratulations!!!
