Silk graduation dress

London, United K...

I’ve been on the look out for a long sleeve maxi dress to wear to graduation, without much luck- until I came across this pattern and fell absolutely in love with it. But being a beginner sewer, I thought it might be a bit over my head.

Some parts were a bit confusing (the extensions to the ties) and it required a lot of work on the fit (I’m a petite 5 ft 2, and the pattern is for ‘tall’ people) which made me panic a bit.

Garment Type
Classic, Evening Wear

Heya, I know its been a long time since, but do you remember how many metres/ yards of fabric you used? I’m 5’2 as well, and am also looking for a modest graduation dress to make!! :)

Hi! Sorry for late reply- I’m hoping your graduation hasnt come around yet! I think it took just under 5m- but I do buy extra to be sure!

Thanks for the message! I used silk from my local Indian material shop. Unfortunately I wouldn’t be able to give you more details on the fabric than it cost me £7/metre!

Thank you! I think it worked out well once I had my panic over the chest being way to big for my small bust! p.s. sorry for delay in reply, I didn’t get any notifications!

Thank you! The modesty is what made me fall in love with the pattern originally. It’s quite hard to find a long sleeve maxi dress to buy, so I’m glad I’ve learnt how to make one. p.s. sorry for delay in reply, I didn’t get any notifications!

Thank you! Was a long wait to graduate (6 years!). Glad I made my own dress, think it might be a story to tell the grandchildren one day :D

I went with red because my graduation gown had a red hood…and I have a weakness for red lippy! Was a bit worried it’d be a bit too red, but I quite like it. It’s a statement colour for quite a statement dress I thought
