Description

I made this shirred summer dress to try out shirring.

For the fabric I used two of my mothers old tunics that she didn’t want anymore and I was happy to see that I could actually reuse some of the pretty embroidery and lace. I didn’t use a pattern, just messured my body and cut out some rectangles. The shirring and the gathering did all the shaping.

Such a very pretty dress! I love the way you’ve combined the different materials and different structures, and the embroidered details along the hem are just gorgeous… great upcycling!

    Thanks for your lovely comments.

Mdevito1 > I’m not sure why that is happening to you, but make sure that there is no tension at all in the elastic thread when you wind the bobbin. Regarding the size I used a rectangle that was about 20 cm wider than my bust measurement. If I make another dress I would probably make it a little wider.

Jadestar > I’m not sure if I’m going to make a how to as it will end up being almost an exact copy of the tutorial I followed for this dress. The tutorial I used was: http://pretty-ditty.blogspot.com/2009/04/smockingshirring-tutorial.html Maybe you can find some advice in there.

This i such a cute dress, I love it. Any chance you could do a how to? i’ve been wanting to have a go at shirring, but am a little wary.

Hi, I’m trying shirring for the first time too and wonder if you had a few pointers. I have about four rows done, but the shirring is shrinking the fabric so much that by the time I wrap it around myself, it doesn’t keep it’s gathered look, it just looks like I sewed some lines on my fabric. Should I have used a bigger piece of fabric? Also, the fabric will slide along the stitches sometimes, as though it were just gathered, not shirred. Don’t know if you have any of the answers, but I’m looking for help anywhere!

    Really nice dress!
