Description

SImple (but effective I hope you agree) belted shift dress made up from the Japanese sewing book “Feminine Wardobe”. This book is full of lovely tops and dresses – but I knew I wanted to make this dress as soon as I opened it. It was an easy make – cutting and sewing time was a couple of hours. Only tracing the pattern pieces from the book is time consuming – they are even more packed in than the burda magazine sheets.

For those of you who are scared of Japanese patterns – take the plunge now! The picture instructions are so much better than most written instructions in English.

Material Notes

Lots! The pattern calls for 3.5 metres. I only had 3 metres but I just shortened the tie belt. You could easily make the dress with about 2.5 metres and use another contrast fabric for the belt. I used a cheap cotton print but am planning on making another version of this is a silk – it would drape and swirl beautifully (swirlability being a vital component of a dress).

I like the fabric at first glance it looks like polka dots. I am obsessed with polka dots right now. The dress looks very comfortable.

I have this fab book too and funnily enough this dress is the one I’ve been looking at for some time now. Your version is very very pretty, I love all that swirlability so I think the project may just have moved up the ‘to-do’ list now!

I thought you had made it from silk at first glance. It catches the light so well! Lovely shape and lovely print. Silk will look good too I am sure! :-)

I bought this book a few weeks ago, and am so delighted to see your version of this dress. It caught my eye also as soon as I flicked through the book. Well done, it looks fab! Hopefully I will get around to doing my own version eventually:)

Lovely dress! After I finish what I’m currently sewing (a jumpsuit) I have my mind set on some Japanese patterns. I just can’t decide on which to start with!

It looks like you’ll have a nice summer with your swirly dress on!

Your dress is soooo nice, with your fabric it looks much younger than the one in the book!
