Sheath dress #109, 09/2012, with dotted fabric
Added Oct 30, 2012
This is a dress based on Sheath Dress 09/2012 #102, and I like both of this style and fabric so much!
(I can’t upload this project as “My project is based on an existing project or pattern on BurdaStyle”. So, let me describe the situation clearly!.)
This is the second dress I have sewn from this pattern, and I found size 38 was too roomy from the first one, which I sewn as a kind of muslin and used a little stretchy wool/cotton from my stash. I also wrongly widened the sleeves for the first version then. (I traced wrong line for the back shoulder line. Silly of me!)
So, for this 2nd version, I used size 36 and correct shoulder line, then found that this fabric is not stretch type and it was rather tight around waist.
So, at last, I used size 36 for the upper body, and size 38 below the breast.
Also, I think I added just 2-3cm to the dress and sleeve lengths, and moved up the shoulder point (around 5mm) for my square shoulders.
This pattern fits me well, and the silhouette of shoulder is so pretty. Since I have square shoulder, to make it pretty (=not manly!) is of very high priority for me.
However, if I pick up one issue here, it should be shoulder eases.
This pattern has no shoulder eases, i.e., lengths of sleeve seam and body seam are almost equal. Therefore, it is very easy to sew up shoulder lines. You don’t need to worry about shirring shoulder seams a little to ease the sleeve seam into the body’s one. However, it also means there are less room for shoulder to move around.
My shoulders and arms are not slim, so I will consider this point in the next project.
(This is not a pattern problem, but a fitting problem to my body.)
The fabric is polyester 100%, and this stripe-like pattern was structured by multi-colored dots as shown in the last picture. I purchased this one as the last 2-meters of a roll, so I was lucky that I can get enough fabric for this dress. And I am sad that I can’t get additional yardages!
Since I found this style is so good on me and easy to sew, I have already prepared another fabrics for the 3rd version. Next one will be a dress for a little colder weather ahead.
