The beauty of making clothes is that a pattern is a block of myriad possibilities. There is so much potential locked in these patterns, we are excited to show you a new way to look at them. Interspersed with our new patterns, we will be showing you RESTYLED patterns from the past. Today we kick it off with the restyled Shakira dress.
Shakira was our first ever plus-size pattern. We’ve gone back into the vaults to give this old pattern a bold new look with contemporary revisions. Available in sizes 46-60, the simple tunic-like shape makes this a versatile pattern for alterations- envision it shortened to the length of a shirt, or make an apron with the pattern pieces like one of our users has done. We removed the sleeves all together, shortened the length and cinched the waist for a fresh look.

I’m having a hard time finding your plus sized patterns on this site, and while the fashion industry considers 10/12 a plus, most of us don’t and neither does the sewing pattern industry.
I would never buy this pattern because this isn’t an accurate representation of the dress in a plus size.
It looks great and so does Alden, but I’m not seeing the dress as I need to.

I’m confused – where are the instructions to make this restyled version? The link from the front page only goes to the old instructions for Shakira.
The new Shakira looks great, but it would be more interesting (and useful) to see it on a larger model. Sorry Arden – you’re absolutely gorgeous – but size 10 is only plus size in fashion-land, not real-life-land.

The original Shakira dress instructions were modified to show you how to make the dress with and without sleeves (Step 9). The belt is a styling piece, it is not part of the dress actually, we got it at H&M.

I love the fabric used here and it looks so superb! Fantastic remake! Reminds me so much of great and colorful 1960 style. Fun and fabulous dress!

Sorry but I have to agree with castargazer (1st post,)If you are going to show us a plus size at least use a plus size model.If only you knew how disheartening It is to see something you can actually make in your size,for it to turn out to be a totally different dress on your self. How about hiring a big lady to advise on the image we see and the image you see when we are looking at the same pattern, maybe worth thinking about seeing as the avrege size where I live U. K. is size 16/18.

Jeez – this model is just HUGE – what is she, like a size 10 or 12? Maybe your staff hasn’t noticed but the average American woman is between a size 14 to 16, with a whole lot of women weighing in at, or above, a size 20. If I were to buy this pattern to make for my daughter [about a size 20 to 22] she’d be in tears for hours and then she’d get mad…because the image in the mirror bears no resemblance to the image you show. Can’t you at least use “plus size” models who are size 18…using size 20 to 22 would be better. The plus size customer KNOWS they are not going to look slim and svelte with flat tummy, but at least if the model is TRULY plus sized, they will have some sort of idea of how the dress will look on. This is why I no longer sew for clients – even slim clients don’t look like the size 0 model pictured on patterns.

hey Castargazer,
plus models start at size 10/12 which is exactly what i am, just like “regular” models are a 2/4 pluses are on the smaller end of plus. We use people from the team as models, I am the community manager here and have been the plus model for a year or so. This dress looks amazing on all sizes, check out what our other members have done with it!

Wow Alden you are so PRETTY!!! I never knew!! Your slim and so beautiful! Good job of modeling this! I love the dress and the tights but Im not a huge fan of the belt though. Still good job to whoever did this revamp its awesome!!

I know the belt was purchased retail…but I want a pattern for the belt! Or something similar….Love it! As for the dress, it is a great cut, but I’m big busted, but not plus-sized, so I don’t think it would work :(

STAGGERINGLY well sewn, and I am crazy in love with the belt…. but I don’t like them together. I would love to see the silhouette without the belt, or with a matching belt, since it does show off Alden’s bangin profile.

The belt was purchased (at H&M I think) to style the dress with- it comes equipped with that little zipper. You can get zippers cut to be any length at many notions shops which sell them. Pacific Trim here in NYC does it for you.

Did you guys take the original sample and remove the arms and refit it for Alden?
I like the zipper belt. That’s a great idea that I’ll file away for future use.
