Inspired by ModCloth’s Honolulu, 1955 halter dress, I decided to create a simpler dress that would fit the wedding my brother was having at the state park in our small town more than a Hawaiian beach.
There isn’t much relation between the inspiration and the finished dress beyond a similar silhouette. The print I choose is sort of Hawaiian arts & crafts (I love it) and much more understated than the bold red flowers on bright blue background of the inspiration dress, but it worked really well for the occasion.
The finished dress suffers from the same problems most of my garments suffer from — not-quite-right zippers, slightly odd fit — but overall it came out well. This was also my first go with boning — so much easier than I thought it would be. It really helps the bodice shape, too.
The pattern was an “It’s Sew Easy!” pattern (2884), but I wouldn’t recommend it until you have a few projects under your belt.
