Description

This isn’t just the world’s funkiest check fabric – it’s the world’s funkiest check fabric with stripes that are actually tape measures with centimetres and inches marked along them.

The dress is self-drafted, with inspiration from classic late-40s-early-50s sundresses. I decided to do a bustier front for the dress to keep with that aesthetic, as well as a half-circle skirt. The cups do have underwires included to keep the shape even. The skirt and the lower part of the bust are cut on the bias, with the main bodice, the straps, and the top part of the bust cut on the straight grain. I thought that having the cut alternating would add interest, and that the skirt on the bias would look best, so all other pieces were cut based on that one. The dress was incredibly fast to make, taking only a few hours.

As you can tell by the photos, it was a very bright day!

Love how you played with the stripes! I love the look of cups but am mortally afraid of making some – is it difficult?

It wasn’t too hard – I used a pair of underwires to get the right shape at the bottom of the cup, then added a bit of a curve to the top of that piece. The top piece is basically a narrow rectangle. I’m quite small-chested so the curves of the pieces are fairly small; you adjust the curve of the pieces depending on how much room you need.

I bought the fabric at a shop called Cleg’s in Melbourne, but the print is ‘Measure Twice’ by Benartex Fabrics. There’s also one with multicoloured tapes on a white background, and white tapes on a black background.

Sew cute! Haha cheesy joke I know but I couldn’t help myself, this fabric is so cute! It doesn’t even look like a novelty print from far away just a fun gingham but when you see it up close it’s a fun surprise with the tape measures :) It fits you so well too, great job!
