This is my version of the Lonsdale Dress from Sewaholic Patterns in a thrifted black and beige poly silk. Since the dress is designed for pear shapes (which I’m not), I went with a size 6 bodice/waistband and a “de-peared” size 0 at the skirt; I ended up taking in the bodice at the side seams but kept the size 6 waistband. I really love the style of this dress and want to make day dress versions! Tasia’s instructions and pattern drafting are excellent.
Because the fabric is sheer, I underlined the skirt pieces in cotton (the bodice was self-lined according to the pattern instructions). It would be a good idea to also underline the pocket pieces since they form part of the skirt, but it’s not see through so it’s not really a big deal. The fabric has a very nice drape and feel, and doesn’t wrinkle (the best part in my opinion!). The dress closes with a 16" regular zipper at center back, though I shortened it to about 13".
Instead of understitching the neckline and pockets, I topstitched them to keep the fabric from rolling, which it wanted to do no matter how many times it was pressed. I also topstitched the ties for the same reason. You have the option of tying the ties in a half knot or double knot at the front, and I decided to double knot it since it felt more secure that way. The nice part is you can adjust the ties if the neckline is a bit loose so you don’t have to fidget too much with the fit there.
I love this pattern and recommend it to others!
Poly silk fabric with cotton underlining; black 16" regular zipper; stay tape at neckline; fusible woven interfacing at waistband; black hem tape
