I took this on as a challenge, to make a dress with fitted bodice and boning. I hoped the sew along would help. Peter’s pointers really did help with figuring out the pleats of the skirt! However, I chose to follow the Burdastyle directions exactly, whereas Peter took a different direction in when to sew in the lining, and to make edge bindings rather than flaps. I also put in boning at all the seams, however, when I put it on it felt too weird. The fittings without the boning seemed fine so I took them all out again. Now it does sag a bit, I might put in different boning. This project was a bit over my head and though I managed it, I am not sure I can say I enjoyed it. It took quite a bit of patience and persistence. The dress is rated “intermediate” but I felt it was difficult. Perhaps because I chose a print? Because I had to make pattern adjustments? My dress is still not quite finished, I still have to hem it and sew down the lining more (it tends to show at the top), I also need to finish the flap ends better. Apology about the pic quality, were taking in a hurry thinking I was making the Monday Oct 3 deadline (NOT, was 9am EST).

Material Notes

Dress: Anna Maria Horner “Diamond mine” cotton voile. Contrast: Navy blue kona cotton. Lining: cotton batiste. 1 invisible zipper. thread. Dritz featherlite boning, removed again.

    As far as the straps go, I’d reposition them (if you can) so they’re angled in the direction of your neck.

    Thanks for the nice comments everyone! I may very well have attached the straps at the wrong angle. I had to think up-side-down and inside-out as they were inserted between the dress and lining layers when they were right-sides together before flipping over the lining to the inside of the dress. Mmm, that sentence might make no sense unless you made the dress.. The straps in the magazine original picture also look a bit strained, but not as much as mine..
